What It Is:

Dogs bark to communicate. It can be:

  • Alert barking (someone outside)
  • Demand barking (wanting attention)
  • Frustration barking (lack of stimulation)
  • Fear-based barking (unfamiliar sounds/people)
  • Excitement barking (play or anticipation)

Why It Happens:

  • Lack of exercise or mental stimulation
  • Reinforcement of barking (if the dog gets what they want)
  • Anxiety or fear triggers
  • Territorial instincts

Solutions:

✅ Management

  • Block visual triggers (frosted window film, barriers).
  • Use white noise or calming music.

✅ Training

  • Teach "Quiet":
    1. Wait for a bark.
    2. Say “Quiet.”
    3. When the dog stops, mark (“Yes!”) and reward.
    4. Gradually lengthen the time of quiet before rewarding.

  • Desensitization:
    • Gradually expose your dog to triggers at a distance they can handle without barking, rewarding calm behavior.

✅ Enrichment

  • Provide puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and daily exercise to reduce excess energy.

What It Is:

Jumping is a normal greeting behavior to get attention or be closer to your face.

Why It Happens:

  • Excitement
  • Attention-seeking
  • Lack of impulse control

Solutions:

✅ Ignore & Remove Attention

  • Turn away, cross your arms, and avoid eye contact.
  • Only give attention when all four paws are on the floor.

✅ Teach an Incompatible Behavior

  • Ask for a Sit or Place as guests enter.
  • Reward the sit consistently.

✅ Practice Controlled Greetings

  • Use a leash.
  • Step on the leash to limit jumping.
  • Reward calm behavior.

✅ Consistency

  • All family members and visitors must follow the same approach.

What It Is:

Chewing is natural, especially in puppies, but it becomes a problem when it targets furniture or belongings.

Why It Happens:

  • Teething (puppies)
  • Boredom
  • Anxiety/stress
  • Lack of appropriate outlets

Solutions:

✅ Management

  • Dog-proof your home (keep valuables out of reach).
  • Use baby gates or pens.

✅ Redirect

  • Provide appropriate chew toys (frozen Kongs, Nylabones).
  • When your dog starts chewing something inappropriate, calmly redirect to the toy and praise.

✅ Exercise & Mental Stimulation

  • Daily walks and interactive games reduce destructive energy.

✅ Supervision

  • Use crate training when you can’t supervise.

What It Is:

Using the mouth to grab skin or clothes without breaking skin, common in puppies.

Why It Happens:

  • Play behavior
  • Overstimulation
  • Teething
  • Lack of bite inhibition training

Solutions:

✅ Teach Bite Inhibition

  • When nipped, let out a high-pitched “Ouch!” and immediately stop play.
  • Resume play when your dog is calm.

✅ Provide Chew Outlets

  • Frozen toys for teething puppies.

✅ Redirect to Toys

  • Keep a toy handy and encourage biting it instead of your hands.

✅ Calm Play

  • Avoid roughhousing that excites biting.

What It Is:

Harder, intentional use of the mouth, sometimes accompanied by growling or snapping.

Why It Happens:

  • Fear or anxiety
  • Resource guarding
  • Frustration
  • Pain or illness

Solutions:

⚠️ Important:
If your dog is biting aggressively, consider professional help ASAP. Safety first.

✅ Avoid Punishment

  • Punishing biting can worsen fear.

✅ Identify Triggers

  • Observe and record when bites happen.

✅ Management

  • Use barriers, leashes, or muzzles as needed.

✅ Behavior Modification

  • Gradual desensitization and counterconditioning to triggers.
  • Teaching alternate behaviors.

✅ Resource Guarding

  • Use trades: “Give” command in exchange for high-value treats.

What It Is:

Pulling ahead on leash during walks.

Why It Happens:

  • Excitement to explore
  • Lack of leash training
  • Reinforcement (pulling gets them where they want)

Solutions:

✅ Use Proper Equipment

  • Front-clip harness or head collar.

✅ Red Light, Green Light

  • Stop walking when pulling.
  • Walk forward when the leash is loose.

✅ Reward Position

  • Reward frequently at your side.

✅ Practice Inside First

  • Train leash manners in a distraction-free area.

✅ Short Training Walks

  • Keep sessions brief and positive.

What It Is:

Escaping the yard or bolting out doors.

Why It Happens:

  • High prey drive
  • Boredom
  • Inadequate containment
  • Reinforcement (adventure outside)

Solutions:

✅ Management

  • Check fences for gaps.
  • Use baby gates at doors.
  • Leash your dog when opening doors.

✅ Recall Training

  • Start indoors: call your dog, reward with high-value treats.
  • Move to secure outdoor areas.
  • Practice daily with increasing distractions.

✅ Doorway Control

  • Teach Wait or Stay at doors.
  • Reward only when released.

✅ Enrichment

  • Make home life more interesting (training games, scent work).

What It Is:

When owners say, “My dog just won’t listen,” it usually means:

  • The dog knows cues but ignores them, or
  • The dog has never truly learned what’s expected in different situations.

Why It Happens:

  • Lack of clarity: The dog hasn’t learned that cues apply everywhere (home, park, etc.).
  • Low motivation: Rewards don’t matter enough to the dog.
  • Distractions: Competing stimuli override training.
  • Inconsistent follow-through: The dog learns that ignoring is an option.

Solutions:

✅ Consistency Is Key

  • Use the same cues every time.
  • Always follow through—if you ask for Sit, don’t let ignoring slide.

✅ Increase Value of Rewards

  • Use high-value treats (real meat, cheese) when teaching or proofing commands.
  • Praise alone often isn’t enough, especially early on.

✅ Practice in Low-Distraction Environments

  • Start in your living room.
  • Gradually add distractions (other rooms, backyard, then public spaces).

✅ Short, Focused Sessions

  • Keep training sessions to 5–10 minutes.
  • End on success and keep it fun.

✅ Teach Attention

  • Name Game: Say your dog’s name. When they look at you, mark (“Yes!”) and reward.
  • Build this so they check in automatically.

✅ Professional Help

  • If your dog tunes you out completely or is highly overstimulated, structured coaching accelerates progress.
